Growing up in Pittsburgh gave me no option other than to be a Steelers fan right from childbirth. Pittsburgh fans are hard-core and “lifers” but getting the chance to hang out at the Dallas Cowboys training camp was awesome! I have met my fair share of pro ball players and you always seem to get two kinds, one being the egotistical asshole that thinks he walks on water and the other being a genuine down to earth nice guy that doesn’t believe because his paycheck is bigger that he is a better person.
Typically, in my experiences, when you get to hang out with ball players and it is not a meet and greet setting then you will get the opportunity to see their real character. Since the training camp was in Oxnard California and the local PD was in charge of security I was able to pull a string or two and squeeze into the VIP area and meet the players and even Jerry Jones the owner of the Cowboys.
I was with Dan and Woody, the Oxnard PD guys I mentioned in the article about the DRAGG race car, and while practice was still going on we slipped out to go take a few pictures with the race car. This is where I met Bullet Tyler, although by rights he is just the pilot of the Dallas Cowboys Coach, he is the funniest son of a “b” I have met in a long while! We only planned on being there for a couple quick pics then we wanted to take the car up behind the VIP tents to get a few pics with the players after they left the field but once Bullet started telling us stories time went by quickly.
Bullet is one of those guys you could hang out with and he would be the life of the party for hours on end and at the end of the day he is just an all around nice guy. I can say even if we didn’t get to meet any players, the time hanging out with Bullet was well worth the drive to Oxnard! After over an hour of gut wrenching laughs we finally made it over to the area behind the tents and parked the car. We thought if we were lucky enough to get a couple of players to stop for a picture they would be quickly on the run, but that was definitely not the case with a few of the players and the owner of the Cowboys Jerry Jones. Jerry was so excited to talk about the DRAGG program and how it will help get kids out of gangs that he even sent one of his staff to go get a camera and snap pictures for themselves.
I then met Leonard Davis. Let me say that I am never one to be intimidated by anything or anybody because I have been in quite a few ( to say the least ) altercations that usually left me in a 5+ on 1 having to swing my way out of trouble but there is no way in hell I would want risk my perfect record on Mr Davis! Even though he looks like one of those guys you want to wait to see if he smiles first before you ask any questions, he is actually a really down to earth cool guy. We talked about his toys and how he also lives by the same creed I do “If its stock it’s no fun!” When I asked him about his cars he laughed and said “Cars, I don’t have any cars! I am too damn big for cars, I have trucks…big trucks!” At 6’6″ and over 350#’s I completely get what he means!
I got a chance to meet quite a few cool guys there and throughout all of that, only one fit the bill of that egotistical asshole I spoke of earlier…Just saying hello to this guy tripped him to say arrogantly, looking at the race car with his nose in the air as he passed not giving two shits about the program…”I bet it’s not faster than my 6-3 AMG” But if that long-haired pretty boy had any fucking brains he would know his 6-3 doesn’t even stand a chance….what an idiot! Sorry for that little rant but I was really hoping to get through the day without meeting one of these stereotypes!
Special thanks to Jerry Jones and all the ball players that stopped by to hangout and bs…I wish you guys all the luck this year…except when playing the Steelers! Sorry guys…it’s a “Burgh thing!!”
